Smarter than the average bear

My latest submission to Threadless. It's been a while since I last submitted anything and I'm fairly pleased with how it turned out. I'd love another print on Threadless. It made my year when Magic Mushrooms was selected. It was knowing it was chosen from so many great designs which made it so special. Help me out by following the link below and giving me your support. Many thanks in advance!

    Eat more Pavlova!

My favourite food has to be a freshly baked Pavlova cake. It’s a type of meringue with a crispy crust and soft, light inner. It’s a dessert that originates from New Zealand and we mainly eat it at summer time barbeques, around the Christmas period or other special occasions. However I can eat it anytime, especially when it’s topped with some delicious cream and a serving of fresh kiwifruit and strawberries. Yum!

Some Australians claim it as their national dessert but we all know that is not true, I guess they are just jealous that we thought of it first. Anyway, all this talking about food makes me hungry.

    Mars Hill Kids stuff

This Easter, I had the pleasure of working on a coloring book for Mars Hill Church in Seattle. I was very happy to have fun with it! All the images were gathered into a book and passed out to all the kids. Hope they enjoy it.

    Calvin + Hobbes redo

    Calvinhobbes1

I like animals. I'm starting another practice series where I will be revisiting old cartoons and comic strip characters who were animals or were accompanied by animals. This is the first and most beloved of many (including your humble blogger). Calvin & Hobbes by Bill Watterson was perfect in every way and don't let anyone tell you different. I'm sure this has been done before, but I had to get it out of me and I hope you enjoy it as much as I had drawing it. Now I must get back to re-reading the entire run of C+H. Byeeeeeee.

    The Letter "Ni"

The 14th letter in the NEW Super Alphabet series I'm working on... yeah, I'm that far along. I actually just finished the letter Omikron and starting on the "P" letter next. After that there's only ten more to go.

    The Avengers by me

    Avengers

I finally took some time to draw some more superheroes. Using primarily handheld tools such as pencils, pens and markers, I've made something I am genuinely fond of. I've been sketching away and I just couldn't stop inking and coloring. Although, this is a formidable team, I always thought it was sort of lame that they only had one female member for so long and she was only an inch high. Maybe we can get Kang the Conqueror to alter the past and enlist some ladysupes to the Earth's Mightiest Hero roster.

Maybe. But, I think that is impossible.

FIRST STOP, more work less waste

    "Hello and welcome!
our goal is to provide creatives with an earth-friendly hub where they can find their new favorite photographers and illustrators.
beyond our attractive green color scheme, the artists on first-stop have pledged to significantly reduce the amount of paper promos they send out, or they already send none at all.
The more artists and creatives who join us, the fewer wastebaskets will be filled with unnecessary and wasteful paper promos. and the world will be happier. at least in that regard."

Mario Sughi's subjects take a turn for the cool interiors of the gallery space and vastness of museums, where connoisseurs and the curious mingle, mindful of seeing and being seen. Enthusiasm is chilled on ice, as they come to make their deals or simply appear to be dealing with it all in such a world-weary way. Sunglasses, short skirts and suits: the obligatory attire makes those in less stand out for all the wrong reasons. Sughi's sharp, as usual, with work that is both hot and cool.

    September 3, 2010
Do not be deceived by the saturated colours in Mario Sughi's latest illustrations, as they are but false promises of envy-provoking days, nights and lives. This playful (or is it cheeky?) portrait of a society that is not without temptation dazzles with its bight lights and sharp lines. The candy colours are a front for A New Sense of Emptiness, also the title of Sughi's upcoming exhibition. Sughi makes us want to buy into this, but lets us know there is no product behind the display.
    November 5, 2009

The people in Mario Sughi's vivid illustrations seem to be living a technicolour, minimalist lifestyle. Evocative at times of David Hockney's work, these are images of consuming couples, sporty young people and languid moments. The leisure class is under Sughi's microscope and gets served back up to us in many different flavours. Sughi's style is saucy and leaves an undercurrent of mystery in the seemingly simple narrative under all those layers of colour.

    Ema art for Japan

Get a Jim Bradshaw original and help a great cause!
Christina Conway invited various artists to do ema art for Japan. 100% of the proceeds go to Give2Asia Earthquake & Tsunami 2011 Fund.

Ema are traditional small Japanese wooden tablets with an image on one side, and a wish or a prayer on the other. To help Japan relief efforts, spread awareness, support and hope, artists are creating ema with their own positive heartfelt imagery for auction to benefit Artists Help Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund at Give2Asia.

Taking inspiration from these simple, traditional and specifically Japanese gestures of wish-making/prayers this auction allows everyone of any culture, religious background and dynamics a similar talisman, using the "if you will it, it will be" thought belief. A small work of art for a big cause.

Bidding is open for 6 days on ebay. My art at ebay.

    Room Walls

Haven't posted in a long time, but here are a few images of the walls I painted in my bedroom. I did this after watching Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child. I used a Sharpie Magnum and just let it flow from there...
